I have a lot of ferns that I haul into my house each winter from the porch. The thing is, once you have one fern you have the potential for multitudes. Think Mickey in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” with the brooms. All you need is an axe to chop up a root bound fern. Right now I have six, and I think at least three need to be divided next summer. In the meantime I enjoy the sight of the new fronds uncurling. The green is such a fresh color.
That color is the Pantone Color of the Year for 2017–Greenery!
It sure beats some of the previous colors of the year. Thanks for the info.
I agree; green is a fresh color! I’m curious, what is the temp. when you usually put them back on the porch?
Generally we need a sustained period of no less than 40 degrees at night. The ferns don’t seem to mind cool, but don’t do cold. That means we usually put them out at the end of April.
Thank you!
Lovely. We tried to grow some outside, transplanted from Jim’s folks’ yard. They didn’t thrive. I think the dirt was not to their liking. 😦
Ferns will quickly let you know when they’re unhappy by making themselves scarce. They like shade and a rich humus-y soil. My ferns only leave their pots when it’s dividing time.
They had the shade but not the right dirt. But we have memories, and I guess that will do.
